Life Stages

From the first days in the hospital, to employment, all the way to retirement…FIRST is here for every stage of life.
Ichthyosis types, or EDDs, are highly variable from person to person and type to type. In fact, many members report their skin can be drastically different from one day to the next. Here, we have gathered common life experiences and advice from members, parents, and medical professionals. Your experiences might vary. Whatever we face, when we understand how our skin might be impacting us, we are able to take better care of skin and live the life we want.

Newborns

As if being a new parent isn’t hard enough, after your child with ichthyosis is born you will be presented a number of additional challenges to face. Here you will learn how to take full advantage of all of the medical professionals ready to help your child make it through their early years with as few complications as possible.

Young Children

As your child gets bigger, new situations will inevitably arise. When they start going to school and making friends, helping them learn to cope with bullying can improve their mental health through out their lives. They will likely need to see their pediatrician more often than other children because of complications from caring for their ears, eyes and skin.

School & College

It’s important to understand the assistance and rights your child has when they start attending school. A teacher informed about Ichthyosis, taking advantage of accommodations, and ensuring your child isn’t discriminated against will ensure they are able to receive a good education and have fun while doing it.

Adults

As an adult with ichthyosis, there will be times when it is important to advocate for your rights. While at work, seeking medical care, or dealing with other situations that arise, you should know how to make sure you are comfortable and safe. Information about starting a family, aging, and retirement are also shared in this section.
