FIRST Emerging Leaders

A new opportunity for young leaders to help shape the future of the ichthyosis community.

Are you 16 – 25 years old and interested in making a difference?

The FIRST Emerging Leaders program give young people the opportunity to bring their ideas, energy, and skills to the Foundation for Ichthyosis & Related Skin Types (FIRST).

This non-governing leadership group will support FIRST through fundraising, advocacy, and volunteerism while providing members with opportunities to build leadership skills and gain hands-on experience with a national rare-disease organization.

Who Are the Emerging Leaders?

The FIRST Emerging Leaders group will include approximately 10 young leaders, ages 16-25, who want to become more involved with FIRST and help support the ichthyosis community.

Members will meet quarterly, participate in committees, and have opportunities for additional training and involvement between meetings. A dedicated FIRST staff member will serve as a mentor and point of contact for the group.

What Will Emerging Leaders Do?

Fundraising

Help support initiaves that strengthen the FIRST community and expand the Foundation’s impact.

Advocacy

Help respond to advocacy opportunities and bring the perspective of the ichthyosis community forward.

Volunteerism

Put your time, talents, and ideas to work on projects that support FIRST.

Leadership Development

Develop valuable, board-ready skills, collaborate with peers, and learn more about effective nonprofit leadership.

What Can You Expect?

As a FIRST Emerging Leader, you can expect:

  • Quarterly meetings, with committee participation and training opportunities between meetings.
  • A dedicated FIRST staff mentor and point of contact
  • Occasional joint meetings with FIRST leadership to encourage collaboration, alignment, and role modeling.
  • An onboarding weekend retreat focused on ichthyosis science, board-service responsibilities, spokesperson training, and Advocacy 101

Who Should Apply?

We’re looking for young people who are ready to get involved and contribute their perspective to FIRST.

You don’t need to have previous board experience. We’re interested in your leadership potential, volunteer experience, skills, ideas, connection to the FIRST mission, and willingness to participate.
